Learn about hydrophobic sand in this live experiment with Huw James, brought to you by the geeks at Head Squeeze. Hydrophobic means it hates water and that's pretty weird for sand, right? Well this magic sand does the complete opposite of what normal sand does. Amazingly it clumps together under the water and once it's out, it remains completely dry. Totally useless for building sandcastles! Huw James postulates just how great it would be to have hydrophobic materials of all kinds. Imagine un-stainable, waterproof clothes where liquid spillages would just roll right off. The scientific applications for such futuristic materials would be manifold and awesome.
